How to Make Your YouTube Channel Private: Step by Step

Wanting a channel out of public view — temporarily or for good — doesn't mean deleting it. YouTube gives you two distinct, reversible ways to do this.

Option 1: hide the entire channel

In YouTube Studio, open Settings → Channel → Advanced settings, scroll to "Remove YouTube content," and choose "I want to hide my channel." Confirm the checkbox acknowledging that your channel name, videos, likes, subscriptions, and subscriber list will all become private, then confirm. Your uploads remain visible only to you and anyone you specifically invite.

This is the option to use when you want to step away from the platform entirely without giving up the channel — a long hiatus, a rebrand you're not ready to reveal, or simply wanting a clean break while you decide what's next. Your subscriber count, watch history, and upload archive all stay intact behind the scenes; they just stop being visible to anyone else.

Option 2: make individual videos private (or unlisted)

If you only want specific uploads hidden rather than the whole channel, go to the Content tab, select the videos, click Edit → Visibility, and set them to Private. This is the better option when you want to keep the channel itself discoverable but pull certain videos from public view.

Private and Unlisted aren't the same thing, and picking the wrong one is a common mistake. Private means only you and people you explicitly invite by email can see the video — it won't appear anywhere, even with a direct link, for anyone else. Unlisted means anyone with the direct link can watch it, but it won't show up in search, on your channel page, or in suggested videos. If you want to quietly share a video with a client or a small group without a full invite process, Unlisted is usually the right tool; if you want it genuinely locked down, use Private.

What happens to comments, subscriptions, and monetization

Hiding a channel or privating a video doesn't delete anything underneath — comments, likes, and watch-history data are preserved and reappear if you switch visibility back. Monetization is a separate concern: a video that's set to Private or Unlisted doesn't serve ads while it's in that state, so any earnings from that video pause until it's public again. A fully hidden channel similarly stops earning on all of its videos for as long as it stays hidden.

Existing subscribers aren't removed when you hide a channel — your subscriber count is preserved, and everyone who was subscribed before stays subscribed. They just won't see new uploads or channel activity while it's hidden, and the channel won't appear if they search for it directly.

It's reversible

Neither option is permanent. You can switch a hidden channel back to public, or flip individual videos from Private back to Public or Unlisted, whenever you're ready — nothing about either setting deletes content or resets your channel's history. The one exception worth knowing: if you want to permanently remove a channel rather than temporarily hide it, that's a separate "Delete channel" action in the same Advanced settings menu, and that one genuinely isn't reversible after Google's grace period passes.
