Product Validation Checklist
An 11-point Pass/Caution/Fail checklist across demand, competition, profitability, sourcing, and compliance risk before you commit inventory capital.
Product Validation Checklist
Devlip's own evaluation framework β not an official marketplace score or a profit guarantee.
Demand
Do you have real evidence of demand (existing sales rank, search volume, or a supplier/competitor selling real volume)?
Avoid launching purely on a hunch β check BSR history, Google Trends, or ask your supplier for their sell-through on this item.
Is demand stable year-round, or have you accounted for seasonality in your cash flow plan?
A seasonal spike item needs inventory and cash timed around its peak window, not launched blind.
Competition
Can you realistically compete on this listing (price, reviews, brand, or differentiation) against the current top sellers?
Count how many sellers already have 500+ reviews. Entering a category with several dominant, well-reviewed listings raises your acquisition cost.
Do you have a genuine point of differentiation (bundle, branding, unique image, better specs) rather than an identical resale?
Selling the exact same supplier photo and listing as 20 other sellers of the same item is a race to the bottom on price.
Profitability
Have you calculated net margin using your real landed cost and actual marketplace fees (not just selling price minus product cost)?
Use the Landed Cost and marketplace fee calculators β referral fees, fulfillment, storage, ad spend, and returns reserve all eat into margin.
Does the net margin clear your own minimum threshold after a realistic ad-spend assumption?
Most operators target at least 15-20% net margin after ads for private label, slightly lower for wholesale/arbitrage.
Sourcing
Have you verified the supplier (sample ordered, business checked, not relying on a single unverified listing)?
A platform listing is not the same as a verified supplier β order a paid sample and check for a real business registration where possible.
Do you have a backup supplier or alternate sourcing option if your primary supplier fails or raises prices?
Single-supplier dependency is one of the most common causes of a stockout or margin collapse mid-season.
Risk & Compliance
Have you checked the product is not restricted, trademarked, patented, or brand-gated on your target marketplace?
IP complaints and restricted-category violations are a leading cause of account suspensions β check before you order inventory, not after.
Does the product have any safety, certification, or labeling requirements (electronics, cosmetics, children's items) you have confirmed you meet?
Certain categories legally require specific certifications (e.g. CPSIA for children's products, CE/UKCA for electronics) before they can be sold.
Can your business absorb the full working-capital cost (inventory + shipping + first-month ad spend) without straining cash flow?
Underestimating total upfront capital need is one of the most common reasons new sellers stall out after one order.
How to Use the Product Validation Checklist
- Enter Your Unit Price & Landed Cost: Input your target selling price and total landed cost of goods (factory price + ocean/air freight).
- Calibrate Marketing & Returns: Most calculators unrealistically assume zero ad spend and zero returns. Input your expected PPC advertising rate (typically 8β15%) and return reserve.
- Review Net Margin & Break-Even: View your true bottom-line profit per unit, return on investment (ROI), and sensitivity test before ordering stock.
What is the Product Validation Checklist?
What Does a Healthy Margin Look Like in 2026?
In modern e-commerce, gross margins must support rising customer acquisition costs. For private label brands on Amazon and Walmart, target a 20% to 30% net margin after all platform deductions and ad spend. For wholesale distributors, aim for 12% to 18%. If your net margin falls below 15%, sudden ad spikes or returns will push your SKU into unprofitability.
Common Mistakes Other Calculators Miss
- Ignoring the Return Rate: Most apparel and consumer goods see 4% to 10% returns. Amazon charges return processing fees and inspection losses.
- Zero Ad Budget Assumption: Organic traffic alone is rarely sufficient at launch. Factoring in 10β15% PPC ad spend prevents negative cash surprises.
- Packaging Creep: A quarter-inch excess in retail box dimensions can bump an item into the higher bulky size tier, doubling fulfillment fees.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does this pull real sales or competition data automatically?
No. Every item is something only you can verify for your specific product β this tool structures the questions and gives you a clear overall read, it does not fetch or estimate any live data.
What does a single "Fail" item mean?
Treat a Fail (e.g. an unresolved IP/compliance risk, or margin below your threshold) as a reason to pause before committing inventory capital, not something to override on optimism alone.
